Jian Yang

Jian Yang, Ph.D.

US Patent Agent

jian@torreypineslaw.com
main: +1 (858) 869-1250

Jian Yang is an experienced scientist, inventor, and US Patent Agent. His passion is to help early-stage biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies build strong IP portfolios around their valuable inventions. His greatest reward is to witness the patented products begin serving millions of ordinary people and becoming the next "big thing."

Jian came straight from the other side of the table. He helped two multinational corporations, BD and Quidel, choose from dozens of early-stage technologies and narrow down to a few commercially successful next-generation platforms. He has real-life experience in product development, regulatory systems, and customer support. Building on his technical expertise, Jian is an expert at helping clients design and maintain a complete patent portfolio for diagnostic platform technology and associated products.

His qualifications:

  • 10 years of real-life experience in developing and evaluating diagnostic products and technologies, scientifically and intellectually.
  • Team member of the first US-based COVID-19 rapid diagnostic test.
  • Completed more than 20 diagnostic products and platform development, integrated three diagnostic assays with platform readers, transferred more than ten products to manufacturing.
  • Integrated knowledge covering all essential functions in the diagnostic industry, including R&D, manufacturing, regulatory, QA/QC, clinical trials, and marketing support.
  • US patent agent #80,269, specializing in drafting and prosecuting diagnostic patents.

Jian received his Ph.D. degree in Chemistry from Michigan State University. He then took on a post-doctorate position at UCLA School of Medicine, in Biological Chemistry Department. Jian is currently registered to practice before the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office. His real-life technical background allows him to stand out in drafting and prosecution of diagnostic patents, including molecular assays, diagnostic methods and processes, companion assays, composition and formulation, novel biomarkers, sample collection and treatment, state-of-the-art platform technology, novel detection technology, reader/reporter technology, software and AI, data management, cyber security, and product designs.

Jian is a strong supporter of the STEM program. He enjoys coaching students in national competitions, such as Chemistry Olympiad and You Be The Chemist Challenge.
