What Does PCT Stand For?

The Patent Cooperation Treaty (simply known as the "PCT"), has been in force since January 24, 1978. This treaty facilitates the filing of applications for patents on the same invention in member countries, mainly by providing a centralized filing procedure and a standardized application format.Filing an international application affords applicants the same filing date for all participating countries and provides a confirmed filing date of the invention and a later time period within which the national applications for patent must be filed.

While the PCT is adhered to by most countries, there are some notable exceptions (especially for medical device and electronics manufacturers). These countries include Taiwan, Argentina, Uruguay, Bangladesh, and Myanmar (having no functioning patent system). Patent applicants must file directly with those countries instead of under the PCT.
